MULTILINGUAL STORYTELLING EVENT
OFF THE SHELF, MULTILINGUAL STORYTELLING EVENT
During the autumn half-term, we spent an enjoyable afternoon at The Circle, listening to stories told in
Arabic, Bangla, and Urdu, all of which were translated into English for everyone to enjoy. Parents and children listened eagerly together, as the storytellers gave a short introduction to their language and culture, before entertaining everyone with a wealth of different stories and sharing Asian sweets.
Dr Debjani Chatterjee told an amusing, traditional, Bengali story based in the court of Akbar, the great Mogul emperor, who was influenced by the wisdom and kindness of his best friend.
Ibtisam Al-Farah transported us back to the time of the Queen of Sheba who ruled with wisdom and tolerance in south-east Arabia (in the land that is now The Yemen), and from whom we can still learn, today.
Dr Ibriham, the Urdu storyteller, first told an amusing story which appealed to the youngest children present, following this with a wonderful, traditional, moral fable for everyone to reflect on.
Languages Sheffield thanks the storytellers and families who helped make this event a fun and mind
expanding, multilingual afternoon.
